Maritime Education Luncheon Raises Over $60K

Oct 24, 2007

Over 100 maritime leaders and friends of the Seamen’s Church Institute attended the 3rd Annual Maritime Training Benefit Luncheon on Oct. 24 at SCI’s – Houston Center. The luncheon raised over $60,000 for the Institute.

Like all higher education, SCI’s costs per student exceed tuition and this annual luncheon is crucial to offsetting expenses. Located in the Port of Houston, SCI’s instructors train over 400 deep-sea, coastal and inland mariners each year.

C. Berdon Lawrence, Chairman of the Board of Kirby Corp. and Joseph H. Pyne, President and Chief Executive Officer of Kirby Corp. co-chaired the event.

Vice Admiral James Card (ret.) gave the keynote address and spoke about the challenges of port security and efficient commerce. A sought-after speaker on maritime issues, Adm. Card called upon his 42 years of maritime safety, security and environmental protection experience in the US Coast Guard and the American Bureau of Shipping to encourage continued cooperation between the maritime industry and government agencies.

“The beautiful weather outdoors matched the positive energy indoors, as SCI corporate supporters engaged in intense conversation, great food and a thoughtful speech by Vice Admiral Jim Card. It was a wonderful day for SCI and our maritime partners,” said the Rev. David Rider, SCI’s Executive Director.
