Motorcycle Event Fundraises for River Ministry

Editor’s Note: A “Motorcycle Poker Run” is an event in which motorcycle riders draw playing cards at various points along a predetermined route, trying to assemble the best poker hand.

What happens when two women who know precious little about motorcycles and even less about motorcycle poker runs decide to have one as a fundraiser for Ministry on the River?

Well, if the two women are Ministry on the River Chaplain Ann Mills, and LaDonna Knoth, Executive Assistant at Marquette Transportation, LLC./Bluegrass Marine, LLC., what happens is an enormous success!

Saturday, November 7, was cool, clear, and colorful in Paducah, KY … in other words, the perfect day for a Poker Run. Four Rivers Harley Davidson was the site of the “First Ever Ministry on the River Poker Run,” and when all was said and done, 128 bikes had registered to ride the 90-mile route. According to the folks “in the know” 50 bikes would have been considered a huge success for a first-time event. Two and one half times that was amazing, but even more amazing was the fact that $4,318.75 was raised for MOR! Again, according to the folks “in the know,” this was the most money ever raised at a Poker Run in Paducah with the exception of the annual Biker’s Christmas Toy Run. Not bad for two gals who didn’t know what they were doing.

Obviously, the event took a lot of planning and work, but with the help of some great folks who knew how to put it all together and then how to pull it off, the day was both fun and profitable. It would have been neither without the strong support of the inland towing industry. Inland mariners came from as far away as Kansas and Arkansas just to ride. Donations of food, drinks, and raffle prizes were beyond generous. Volunteers helped at the draw stops, and Four Rivers Harley Davidson was invaluable. Articles in the Paducah Sun and Waterways Journal helped to publicize the event, as well as industry assistance in getting the word out.
So, will there be a “Second-Ever Ministry on the River Poker Run”?

Absolutely! Plans are already in the works for another ride to take place this spring. Why don’t you plan to come and ride with us?  All bikes are welcome!

Thanks to our sponsors!
