The Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) congratulates the winners of An Insider’s View, its inaugural maritime photography contest. On March 15, SCI invited active and retired maritime industry employees to submit up to five photos depicting “art in everyday life.” After the contest ended on May 15, a panel of three photographer judges considered each entry carefully before selecting the Grand Prize Winner and seven runners up. SCI congratulates John Dunaway, whose photo “Departing Gatun Lakes Lightning” earned the Grand Prize. The Institute additionally congratulates Craig Zimmerman, Kirk Dietrich, Wade P. Streeter, Rip Claunch, Josh Pierce and Jeffrey Higgins as runners up. All eight winning photos appear on the front page of SCI’s website throughout the month of June.
An Insider’s View challenged mariners to depict the beauty of the maritime workplace, a perspective those outside the industry rarely see. Using angles, light, perspective and composition, SCI invited maritime industry employees to snap photos that superbly capture the “extraordinary” in maritime workplace environments.
A panel of distinguished photographers judged contest entries: Gregory Thorp, winner of the James V. Swift Award for maritime photography; John Guider, renowned maritime photographer and creator of The River Inside; and Leo Sorel, New York City-based photojournalist and freelance photographer.
The Grand Prize Winner will receive a just-released iPad (Wi-Fi 16 GB) and a copy of The River Inside.
