Community Connections Campaign
Thursday, June 25, 2020
In celebration of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) annual Day of the Seafarer (#SeafarersAreKeyWorkers), the Seamen's Church Institute (SCI) is honored to launch an exciting new digital initiative, Community Connections (#CommunityConnections).
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have gained a new appreciation for everyday life experiences previously taken for granted, such as celebrating milestones with family & friends, gathering for religious services, shopping for items beyond the essentials, or visiting relatives near and far.
Seafarers who work on the international waters typically are away from home for 9+ months, while inland mariners on America’s rivers have a grueling 30 day on/30 day off schedule, bringing us 90% of the goods we use in our daily lives. Sometimes chaplains are the only outside people crews interact with during their time onboard. From hospitality to advocacy and training, mariners depend on SCI.
SCI is debuting the launch of the Community Connections campaign on June 25 on our social media channels (Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn) with a video narrated by SCI's President & Executive Director, The Rev’d Mark S. Nestlehutt followed by vignettes of SCI chaplains expressing their appreciation to mariners worldwide. The campaign will run through the end of the year, and will include interactive content designed to educate supporters and the general public on the critical role mariners play in our everyday lives, and the commonalities we share with them. Viewers will be encouraged to join the conversation, and show their support for the invisible workforce of the maritime community by making an online donation to SCI here.
