Karen was working as a deckhand for American Commercial Lines (ACL) when she met Ministry on the Rivers and Gulf Chaplain Kempton Baldridge, who encouraged her to try for her steersman license—even though she'd never considered it an option. She decided to train at the Inland Waterways Academy and received the Capt. Philomena Daniels Scholarship, named after the first female licensed steamboat pilot. After passing her exams, Karen is on the way to becoming a captain herself!
